The man inside the computers at the ESOC By Mark Crosby - Mega PD
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi! Its Mark here again! I have know someone in the European space agency
so I said to myself "Why dont I interview him?" and here it is:
This is my interview with Jim at the European Space Operations Centre,
Darmstadt, Germany. Jim is a friend of mine. He is scotish!
"Hi Jim! What do you do at the ESOC?"
"I fit new chips and boards into all of the computers here. Some of these
computers control the `Non-stationary satalites` that wiz around the
world. The problem with these is that we cant control these by our selfs.
When the satalites pass over America, control is passed over the the
Americans. When the satalite passes over Australia, control is passed
to the Australians. This software that I fit passes control over to
each satalite etc. When I fit new software into the computers here, I
sometimes need to hop over to Australia for 5 or 6 weeks to set up the
computers to use the new software. That only takes a few days, but dont
tell the ESOC that. I can have a nice rest, payed to goto Australia!"
"You mean `All expensives payed`?"
"Yes! And a company car!"
"Do you use Amigas at all?"
"We use them for some of the graphics storage of the satalite pictures."
"What did you do before working at the ESOC?"
"I worked for Philips in London. I tested new software, kept the network
running etc. The company Philips layed me off because they were making
`cut-backs`!"
"What computers do you own at home? Do you have an Amiga?"
"Not yet, but I am thinking of geting one! I have to use a PC at home
because I need to do a lot of work at home. I do have a very fast modem
though. Its got everything! MNP Datacorrection, over 96000 BAUD, etc!"
